Terrapins can make fantastic rewarding pets when given the right environment. They are fascinating to watch and an interesting pet all round. Terrapins grow very fast and can outgrow a small fish tank in no time. It is often far cheaper and wiser to go for a larger tank in the first place as two 10" terrapins need a lot of swimming space. You need to provide a land area for your terrapins to climb out of the water and bask. You can use a piece of cork bark, or man made basking spots like the turtle log. Use a 40w - 60w reptile basking lamp to create a basking temperature of around 90 ºF (32ºC). The water temperature should be around 24ºC (75ºF).
It is important to obtain a good quality filter when keeping terrapins as they create more mess than fish, we recommend you buy at least the double the size required for fish filtration, and ideally an external canister filter such as a Fluval 405 to keep your water crystal clear. All reptiles require special lighting to keep them fit and healthy, terrapins are no exception to this rule. You must provide your terrapins with a UVB light so that they can synthesize vitamin D3.
